Unraveling This Life

A little bit of this . . . a whole lot of that . . . and just a pinch of sparkle

This weekend involved lots of grading – tons of outlines that contain some hilarious inaccuracies (you don’t need a college degree to be an anesthesiologist) or half-truths (teachers don’t work weekends) plus a smattering of vocabulary. Thankfully, two things got me through a rather painful two days: reading/watching all about Emily’s latest birth shoot and a newish playlist. Y’all know how I feel about playlists and music . . . something about a carefully created list of music can improve even the foulest of moods (did I mention that we were trying to let Lucy sleep outside of her crate or that Dave was watching the new Arrested Development on Netflix? That translates to when your toddler discovers that she can get out of…

Ballad of John and Yoko

Posted on June 17, 2012

We’ve been talking about music this month on O + U, and I figured that I needed to get this mix tape from my past sorted out. Years ago, like almost 21 to be precise, CDs were so cutting edge that most cars didn’t have a CD player unless you were fortunate enough to have a tape adapter for your portable CD player. But almost every car had a tape player, and cars were filled with all sorts of tapes. Now, you would be hard pressed to even find a tape player. So when you discover the ultimate mix tape, the one that you played at your wedding, that doesn’t have any of the tracks listed because you couldn’t be bothered to list them…

Dancing On My Own

Posted on May 5, 2012

A few days ago, my sister posted on Overexposed + Underdeveloped her final wishes. Final wishes as in how her funeral will run. Trust me, no one’s anticipating that any time soon, but we’ve had morbid conversations like this for years and years. Usually the conversations delve into just the music, but I can see that Erika has given this a little more thought than I have. That being said, here are the songs that I want played even when I won’t be able to hear them (and yes, there’s a Spotify playlist by the same name). “Breathe Me” by Sia – never, ever get tired of this song or her voice “Linger” by The Cranberries – many happy memories singing this with the…

This Woman’s Work

Posted on April 2, 2012

Does the song make you cry? You know what makes me cry . . . moms who try to dick around and “prove” that they work harder because of their own label: working mom or SAHM. I’ll let you in on a secret . . . you’re both awesome so cut each other some slack. I’m over at O + U today starting off the month of work and attempting to put an end to the “who works harder” debate that moms are fond of having. Won’t you join me? Fan of Kate Bush? Fan of She’s Having a Baby? Me, too! The song starts about 3:20ish and as an added bonus, you get “Crazy Love” by Bryan Ferry about 7:50ish.

Cinnamon Girl

The hardest part about a post? Coming up with the title. Silly and stupid, I know, but that’s the sad fact. What to title a post . . . it all comes down to that. I’ve had full posts ready to go. And I hit delete because I couldn’t come up with a title. So I decided to go back to an old format. For example, you might think this is about baking or cooking. Here’s a fun fact: I don’t really do either. Sure I’m a pretty decent cook and baker, but the lack of a dishwasher really prevents me from going “hog wild” into the whole culinary arts (that and the fact that it’s just the two of us for the most…
