A little bit of this . . . a whole lot of that . . . and just a pinch of sparkle

Dear Sadie – Technically, you’ve been a Greenwood for exactly two full weeks today. I say technically because we adopted you on November 16, 2014. But on that day, I was pretty sure you might have been the biggest mistake I’d ever made. On our drive home from Last Chance Ranch, you quickly figured out how to get out of the back seat and come up front with me. You spent that drive alternating between standing in the passenger seat and looking out the window or sitting half on the passenger seat and half in my lap, licking my hands. At one point, you decided you were car sick and very nicely jumped in the backseat to puke. Once we arrived home, you peed…

Second Chance (2:30)

Love. Peace. Freedom. Those grandiose ideals that I promised to be grateful for today? Taking a pass on the last two, but I’ll go with love. Lucy . . . I love Lucy. There’s no pun intended in that statement. Lucy, our 2-year-old mutt, is a snuggle bug. She’s needy and whiny and attention seeking. But she’s also loyal and funny and goofy. Two years ago, I would have told you that I was relishing being dog-free for the first time in over a decade, but truly it was a three-month period that was bereft of a lot of joy and companionship. The girls were at school, and Dave was traveling quite a lot. That meant me and the cats, who pretty much looked…

Our annual trip to Ohio has been occurring for almost as long as we’ve lived on the East Coast. For nearly 20 years, I’ve made the trip home during the same two week time frame in July, give or take a few days. The beauty of Time Hop? You can see what you were doing for the past five years, thanks to social media, and for the past week, it’s been a rehash of the trips home.¬†Pictures from wine-fueled trips down memory lane with my sisters. Posts about a great game of Scatagories. Tweets about something only one other person will “get.” I’m pretty sure that when I look back next year, the days will be filled with images of Lucy and Maggie. You…

I don’t think 2013 has been a particularly hard year, but I can’t say that I will look back on it with much love or fondness. About the best thing I can say about it: the girls graduated from college with honors and on time. That’s about it. Oh, and we adopted Lucy, our lovable beagle-Labrador. And I started running. And I still love my job. And my husband (that goes without saying since he pretty much balances me). And I got to spend one more Christmas with my girls and him. So, in 2014, I vow to: – blog more (I miss it) – grade more efficiently (because it sucks) – run better (still trying) – cook more (because I’m pretty much proficient…

The Good Kind

A few weeks ago I chaperoned our school’s webpage design class for the regional computer fair. Our district has remained rather steadfast in its commitment to technology, and our students are the chief beneficiaries. The students I was with are chosen to participate in a class that focuses on various computer applications, programs, and design, but the students in our district have access to different types of technology throughout their academic career. At the computer fair, the webpage design class took five out of the six first place awards as well as the majority of the second and third place awards to boot. By far and away the most impressive award was a first place win for the mobile app game that one young…
