“We’re headed to Chicago this weekend,” I told my co-workers, “to see a hockey game. Dave’s and my alma mater is playing his sister’s and her husband’s school at Soldier Field.” That’s where I lost people. Not with the weekend trip to Chicago. Or the love of hockey. At the mention of it being outdoors in February. “You know it’s cold in Chicago this time of year, right?” was the most common response. Granted, I knew that . . . but holy hell, nothing prepared me for the level of cold. Yikes! Here’s our first full day in the Windy City, windchill 4 F. Or, as I would tell my daughters, a little brisk. This 10-on-10 is from February 16, 2013 between 7 AM and 3:30 PM. When you’re done here, go check out Laura’s day.
The next day was the big game. And sadly, even though Miami University was ranked ahead of the University of Notre Dame, we weren’t successful and lost. All that being said, the seats in the Sky Box were pretty sweet . . . and warm. You seriously did not think I was going to sit out in the cold at Soldier Field and watch a hockey game, did you? Now head on over to Laura Louise Photography and check our her 10-on-10. Ironically, the lovely Laura was in Chicago the same weekend I was.
I understand “brisk” 🙂 looks like you didn’t let the windchill stop you from having a great time!
My daughters always chide me for using “brisk” to describe any temperature between 0 and 30. I almost said it was bone-chillingly cold but brisk worked well for that weekend.
I got nippons just reading about how cold it was. Damn. Looks like you had a blast, though!
I didn’t include the photo of our group without hats. Basically, unless your name was Jill or you didn’t come from Chicago to begin with, you left your hat at home.
This makes me feel really bittersweet…knowing I was at a wedding an HOUR from you. Love how you saw the city…one of my fave cities. Adore that bus stop!!! And the pop of color in the 3rd shot. And hells yes to the beer flight!
When I took the bus stop shot, my thought was, “What would Laura do?” I still don’t think it worked completely. Maybe we need to do a ChiTown weekend!
Now that’s just too cold, sounds like the kind that makes your nostrils hurt!! But looks like you braved it well & got some awesome shots- way to channel your inner street photographer!!
It was totally “snot freezing” weather as we like to call it. Thank goodness for Uggs! They kept my feet toasting warm, which made for a slightly warmer trip.
I’ve always been fascinated by the bean, I hope to see it in real life one day. Loved looking at your day xx
There’s a photo in my Flickr stream taken from the inside of the Bean. I’d never seen that before and was really interested to see how it changed the perspective. Quite a fascinating piece of art/architecture.
you know, i nearly forgot the cold as i went through these. every one is so different, i feel like you convey the experience on a big and small scale. some are fantastic street photography, some so quiet and personal, snapshots. i always enjoy your eye, and the heart that comes through.
I take the photos that I like . . . some are more successful than the others. People? Not really around that much for me, sadly. The girls are grown and in another city, so many times it’s just inanimate objects. Or the puppy.
i love seeing your street photography! for a girl who has never been to a big city i could spend forever taking it all in! xo
I am so not a street photographer (Laura Yurs is the bomb at that!), but I enjoy fiddling with it. Get yourself to a big city now . . . so much to see and photograph.
You know, I went to Chicago in January, years and years ago. Other than being such a cool place, I remember the cold. The bitter, I want to die, cold. Which is way I loved the irony of that Seurat image wedged into all that bundled up Windy City frigid. Looks like it was a fun, perfect day. xo
It was an awesome day. So awesome that I stopped taking photos after our lunch 🙂 But it was beyond cold. The kinda cold that should be used only as torture.
Brrrrrrrrr! I was in Chicago once in February. I remember my legs feeling like icicles! Love all your photos. I was transported right back into Ferris Bueller’s Day Off when looking at the pic of the Seurat painting. I haven’t had the privilege of seeing it in person.
It was my first time seeing that Seurat painting, but I’ve seen the companion piece in the National Gallery in London years ago. I broke down in tears in the middle of the gallery and had to be moved out to the way by my husband.
