A few days ago, my sister posted on Overexposed + Underdeveloped her final wishes. Final wishes as in how her funeral will run. Trust me, no one’s anticipating that any time soon, but we’ve had morbid conversations like this for years and years. Usually the conversations delve into just the music, but I can see that Erika has given this a little more thought than I have. That being said, here are the songs that I want played even when I won’t be able to hear them (and yes, there’s a Spotify playlist by the same name).

Week 1: Truths and Tips
  • Breathe Me” by Sia – never, ever get tired of this song or her voice
  • Linger” by The Cranberries – many happy memories singing this with the Girls
  • Arizona” by Kings of Leon – highly underrated song by KOL
  • House of Cards” by Radiohead – quite simply the most beautiful song ever (and not on Spotify . . . damn you!)
  • A Change Is Gonna Come” by Sam Cooke – try not to get choked up by this. I dare you.
  • Millennium” by Robbie Williams – ahhh, Robbie Williams
  • Zombie” by The Cranberries – seeing your small toddler singing “Zombie” means you did something right
  • LDN” by Lily Allen – really, anything by Lily Allen is fine including “Fuck You“, but this is happy and peppy and fun
  • So What’Cha Want” by Beastie Boys – blast this one loud
  • Cry Me a River” by Julie London – it’s okay to tear up a little if you want
  • You Know I’m No Good” by Amy Winehouse – where else are you going to hear Roger Moore referenced?
  • You’ll Never Find Another Love Like Mine” by Lou Rawls – someone make sure Dave knows this is for him
  • The Bucket” by Kings of Leon – it’s my favorite KOL song
  • Cheers (Drink To That)” by Rihanna – lift your glasses high and drink some for me and none of that pouring shit on the floor crap, OK?
  • Babylon” by David Gray – I could tell you where I was the first place I heard this song
  • Trouble” by Ray LaMontange – just sit back and enjoy it
  • I’m a Slave 4 U” by Britney Spears – because it’s not a party without Britney
  • Tobacco Road” by Lou Rawls – if you feel like twirling on a pole, go for it
  • Thorn In My Side” by Eurythmics – it’s the song I think of most when I think of my husband since it was “our song” at our wedding reception (not kidding)
  • Sweet Disposition” by The Temper Trap – but I’ll always think of the Girls with this one
  • There She Goes” by The La’s – and this one
  • Valerie” by Mark Ronson and Amy Winehouse – dance, people, dance! It’s a party!
  • Make Some Noise” by Beastie Boys – and you should be having fun, right?!
  • Lonely Boy” by The Black Keys – I want everyone to learn the “dance” in the video and do it
  • Hate On Me” by Jill Scott – I’ll let you figure this one out for yourself
  • Om Nashi Me” by Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros – it’s a mellow song and the first time I realized that my Girls were grownups
  • Dancing On My Own” by Robyn – a new favorite and it’s staying right where it is
  • Starships” by Nicki Minaj – don’t even think of using the edited version; y’all know me too well for that shit
  • When the Stars Go Blue” by Ryan Adams – play a cover of this and I’ll come back and haunt your ass until you reassemble everyone and play this version (and I don’t care if my husband prefers the Corrs version . . . and just told him as much)

It’s a list that keeps changing and evolving, but the majority of these songs have been on the “list” for quite some time. Personally, I think that funerals are a little morbid, so I’m keeping it light when it’s my time. And I expect you to do the same . . . otherwise, there’s no telling what I’ll do.

PS – Right now, I want the photo in this post used because I kinda like it.
